The hidden cost of interruption

Gloria Mark's research at UC Irvine measured what an interruption costs: on average, 23 minutes to return to the previous level of focus. Not seconds — minutes.

Now do the math. If you check your phone 50 times a day (the average is higher) and even 10 of those checks happen while working or studying, your day is fragmented beyond repair. You didn't lose the 30 seconds of the check: you lost the depth of everything around it.

Attention residue: the silent poison

It gets worse. Sophie Leroy described attention residue: when you switch from task A to task B, part of your mind stays on A. Your phone on the desk — even face down, even off — produces this effect: a University of Texas study showed the mere visible presence of a smartphone reduces available cognitive capacity. Your brain knows a possible reward lives in there, and spends energy not thinking about it.

The multitasking myth

Multitasking doesn't exist; task switching does, and every switch has a cost. People who describe themselves as good multitaskers systematically score worse in tests — the feeling of productivity from hopping between things is exactly that: a feeling.

Rebuilding blocks of depth

The solution isn't a weekend detox (Monday resets everything). It's structural: blocks of time where interruptions are expensive, not impossible.
